MSc Entomology

Programme information

The MSc (Entomology) will equip you with skills in entomology for a career in the government or private sector, or for PhD research. This programme enables you to develop your expertise in a field of entomology that interests you. You will learn from leading researchers with expertise in agricultural, behavioural, ecological, forestry, medical and veterinary, physiological, and systematic entomology, among other disciplines. Graduates can expect to be in high demand because there is a shortage of scientific professionals with knowledge of insect biology in Africa.

The Department of Zoology and Entomology is dedicated to producing highly motivated, well trained and successful postgraduate students by striving to create an environment in which students can reach their full potential. During a graduate degree it is important to gain skills in scientific research and in conducting research. The MSc Entomology is conferred on the grounds of a written dissertation (but may involve additional postgraduate coursework, if prescribed by the Dean). The dissertation reports the results of a research project that you undertake in your field of entomological interest. In addition, you will submit at least one manuscript resulting from your MSc research to a peer-reviewed scientific journal before the end of the programme. By doing so, you will demonstrate your ability to conduct research and produce results that contribute to entomological knowledge in your chosen field.

The duration of study is a minimum of one year uninterrupted full-time study, but 18 months of full-time study from registration to dissertation submission is the norm.
