The master's degree in Veterinary Medicine is a professional degree and equips the student with a broad scientific background in the theoretical and practical aspects of the chosen field of study.
The specific master’s degree in Bovine health and production will provide a candidate with an advanced and applied training to augment knowledge and experience gained during undergraduate training and practice. Depending on the student’s focus and field of interest he/she can choose per capita topics pertaining to either dairy herd health, beef herd health, feedlot beef production or clinical medicine. Advanced training in the chosen topics will be offered firstly in the form of seminar presentation and discussions. Clinical applications will be offered in the form of field visits to the relevant chosen areas and fields of interest as well as clinical supervision within the veterinary hospital clinical rotations. Supervised clinical training comprises a minimum of 90 weeks. Integration and application of knowledge of health and production problems and evaluation of health status, production and economic effectiveness of dairy and or beef systems will be core.
The MMedVet degree is conferred by virtue of completion of a minimum of 90 weeks of clinical training (to be undertaken at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Campus); an oral, written and practical examination in the specialist module; and a mini-dissertation.
The MMedVet degree may entitle the holder to registration as a specialist with the South African Veterinary Council together with other requirements as determined by Council. Candidates are encouraged to review current Council guidelines on specialist registration.
Students are required to confirm whether a module will be presented in any particular year. This enquiry should be directed to the relevant head of department according to the syllabi information provided in the list of modules in this publication.
Elective modules will in all instances be determined in consultation with the head of department in which the proposed special field of study is offered. If deemed necessary, modules offered by other faculties of the University of Pretoria may form part of the prescribed programme.

(i) Unless stipulated otherwise, the Dean must be satisfied that the candidates will have sufficient access to appropriate facilities and, where necessary, supervision by an appropriate person to complete the work required for the degree at a satisfactory level.
(ii) Attendance requirements are determined in each individual case by the head of department concerned.
(iii) Candidates will be required to keep a logbook or similar record of experiential training which is to be signed by the supervisor every 6 months. The logbook or other suitable record is to be made available for auditing when the specialist module is monitored by the South African Veterinary Council.

Minimum admission requirements:
BVSc degree or an equivalent veterinary degree Applicable experience of at least two years as a veterinarian, or training of at least one year in the specific field as an intern at a recognised training facility An entrance examination may be required Registration as a veterinarian with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) or authorisation by the SAVC to be enrolled for MMedVet studiesAdditional requirements
The candidate will be required to work full-time at the faculty in the field of specialisation under supervision of an approved supervisor for the required duration.
Notification
While the MMedVet is an advanced professional programme equivalent to specialist certification, registration to practise as a specialist is controlled by the SAVC or international equivalent. These bodies may have additional requirements for registration that are not university requirements. Please check their requirements as well.
