Programme information
This programme is a must if you want to pursue a career that requires an understanding of the biology of insects. Whether you are interested in conservation of the rich African insect fauna, control of agricultural pests, protection of human and animal health, management of pollinators, or are fascinated in the extraordinary variety of insects, the BScHons Entomology is an essential step for you to become an expert in these fields. There is a shortage of scientific professionals with knowledge of insect biology in Africa, so you will complete this programme with a skill set that is in high demand.
The major component of the BScHons Entomology is a research project and preparation of a thesis under the supervision of an expert entomologist. During the research project, you will learn vital skills in time management, experimental design, data collection and management, data analysis, critical thinking, and oral and written communication. Compulsory coursework modules complement these experiences by providing explicit training in the selection and use of appropriate data analysis methods, scientific communication, as well as current topics in entomology. Additional elective modules on systematics, evolution and biogeography; ecological and evolutionary physiology; mammal ecology; behavioural ecology; or global climate change and biodiversity can be selected based on your personal interests.

The Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences is home to more than 6 500 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Faculty presents degrees in fields ranging from the proverbial A to Z – from actuaries to zoologists, and consists of 13 departments.
