BScHons Zoology

Programme information

This programme provides an opportunity for you to pursue your interests in the behaviour, conservation, ecology, evolution, genetics or physiology of animals and represents a gateway to becoming a professional zoologist. Completion of the BScHons (Zoology) is a pathway for you to work in private environmental consultancies, municipal, provincial or national government departments and agencies involved with nature conservation and planning, game reserves, non-government organisations involved with environmental advocacy and education, or for research organisations and universities.

The major component of the BScHons (Zoology) is a research project and preparation of a thesis under the supervision of an expert in your chosen field of zoological research. During the research project, you will learn vital skills in time management, experimental design, data collection and management, data analysis, critical thinking, and oral and written communication. Compulsory coursework modules complement these experiences by providing explicit training in the selection and use of appropriate data analysis methods, and scientific communication. Additional elective modules on systematics, evolution and biogeography; ecological and evolutionary physiology; integrated pest management in Africa; mammal ecology; behavioural ecology; plant-insect interactions; or global climate change and biodiversity can be selected based on your personal interests.
